HIAL team visit’s to Afghanistan
The Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, Ladakh, has just completed a UNDP Afghanistan project that proposed the methodology for promoting passive solar space heating technology and related capacity building in Afghanistan. As part of the project, three of our leading experts, Mr. Sonam Wangchuk (Founding Director), Mr. Phuntsog Namgail (Senior Site Supervisor), and Mr. Rohit Ranjan (EA to Founding CEO & Research Lead) along with the UNDP team visited five provinces in Afghanistan between November 16-30, 2022.
Projects like these in cold and arid mountainous regions, where space heating and cooking typically account for about 90% of a household’s energy consumption, could help reduce energy-related issues. Using passive design features, this energy can be obtained with great efficiency from the almighty sun and could help ease energy problems throughout Central Asia.
