Theme & Scope

Theme of the Festival

The Sun & Earth Festival, a celebration of low-carbon, eco-responsive and regenerative architecture for a carbon-neutral Ladakh. Curated by the School of Eco-Responsive Architecture and the School of Energy Studies at HIAL, this festival continues the rich legacy of solar-heated mud housing in Ladakh. By embracing nature’s elements—the sun and earth , the festival brings together traditional wisdom and modern innovations to promote sustainable building solutions that address the challenges of climate change.

Scope of the Festival

Spanning 13 immersive days from July 28 to Aug 09, 2025, the festival is divided into two focused parts:
Earth Construction : Workshops led by world-renowned experts will cover natural building techniques such as rammed earth, cob, adobe, straw clay, earth finishes and passive design principles, etc.
Solar Energy for Buildings : Sessions on solar geography, energy-efficient building designs for different climatic regions, thermal comfort considerations and passive solar strategies to significantly reduce carbon emissions in the built environment.
Throughout the festival, participants will learn, share and co-create with international experts and fellow practitioners. Whether attending one part or both, they will gain practical insights, exchange ideas and contribute to shaping a sustainable future for mountain communities.
