Himalayan Institute of Alternatives Ladakh invites you to the Sun & Earth Festival - a celebration for a carbon-neutral Ladakh, curated by the School of Eco-Responsive Architecture and School of Energy Studies at HIAL. Join us for 9 days of exciting and enriching hands-on workshops and experiential sessions celebrating best practices in solar energy and earthen materials for low-carbon, eco-responsive, and regenerative architecture.
Building on Ladakh's rich 40-year history in low-carbon Solar-heated Mud Housing and SECMOL's 25+ years of experience, HIAL proudly presents the 6th edition of this much-loved International Festival from 28th July to 5th August , 2025. The festival is structured in two parts: Earth Construction and Solar Energy for Buildings, allowing participants to attend either or both segments based on their interests and availability.

HIAL aims to develop Ladakh into a benchmark for a sustainable economic living for the mountain world, where students receive a meaningful education that prepares them for a life of dignity in harmony with nature.
It empowers the mountain youth to take charge of their contexts through contextual and experiential learning rooted in grassroot innovation and indigenous knowledge systems.
The Sun & Earth Festival, a celebration of low-carbon, eco-responsive and regenerative architecture for a carbon-neutral Ladakh. Curated by the School of Eco-Responsive Architecture and the School of Energy Studies at HIAL, this festival continues the rich legacy of solar-heated mud housing in Ladakh. By embracing nature's elements—the sun and earth , the festival brings together traditional wisdom and modern innovations to promote sustainable building solutions that address the challenges of climate change.
This immersive event seamlessly interleaves Earth Construction and Passive Solar Energy for Buildings. You'll gain practical, hands-on knowledge in natural building techniques like rammed earth, cob, and adobe, while integrating essential passive design principles.
Throughout the festival, participants will learn, share and co-create with international experts and fellow practitioners. You will gain practical insights, exchange ideas and contribute to shaping a sustainable future for mountain communities.
