Teacher Transformation Fellowship at HIAL

Introduction

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 marks a progressive shift in India’s education landscape, emphasizing holistic, experiential, discussion-based and learner-centred education. However, the success of this transformative policy rests not just on new structures or curricula, but primarily on the shoulders of great teachers. At HIAL, we believe that a truly impactful education system is not built by policies but by visionary educators who inspire change from within the classroom.

It is often said that a good teacher can make any curriculum meaningful. With this belief at the core, HIAL is launching the Teacher Transformation Fellowship, a program designed to cultivate and empower educators capable of implementing the spirit of NEP through innovative and contextual teaching practices rooted in Indian Knowledge Systems.

Vision

To reimagine education through a new generation of teachers who blend contextual learning, experiential pedagogy, transdisciplinary approaches, and uphold the HIAL philosophy of integrating the development of Higher ranges of the Mind and Spiritual Education with the 3Hs of Bright Head, Kind Heart and Skilled Hands.

About the Fellowship

The 11-month residential Teacher Transformation Fellowship will begin on 15th September 2025 at the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, Ladakh (HIAL). It is open to applicants from Ladakh, across India and around the world.

The program is designed for educators with prior teaching experience (in any capacity), a strong growth mindset and a willingness to explore and contribute to alternative education models. Fellows will engage deeply with both theory and practice through a mix of:

  • Intensive workshops
  • Real-time classroom teaching
  • Curriculum and pedagogy design
  • Exposure visits to pioneering educational institutions
  • Reflection and mentorship sessions

Our Educational Philosophy

HIAL's K-12 School & Fellowship Approach

HIAL's K-12 school and the Teacher Training Fellowship will be rooted in experiential learning, contextual relevance, and transdisciplinary approaches. We believe in freedom and flexibility, where learners choose paths that match their pace and potential.

Our approach integrates Indian Knowledge Systems, spiritual education, and higher-order thinking skills—all intentionally aligned with the NEP, ensuring that the school and fellowship not only reflect policy aspirations but actively implement them on the ground.

Core Principles

  • Experiential Learning: Learning by doing and reflecting
  • Contextual Relevance: Curriculum grounded in local culture, ecology and life
  • Transdisciplinary Approach: Blurring boundaries between subjects
  • Freedom and Flexibility: No fixed age-based progression
  • Integration of Indian Knowledge Systems
  • Spiritual Education and cultivation of inner values
  • Higher-Order Thinking Skills: Critical, creative and reflective thinking
